Will there be an exhibition? Is MWC 2020 at risk?

The GSM Association, which acts as the organizer of the Mobile World Congress, will hold a meeting on Friday at which the main question will be the item on whether to cancel the exhibition. And this is surprising, because until recently GSMA announced that the exhibition will be held in the period scheduled for February 24-27 and even revealed the precautions being taken.

A little earlier, the Spanish Ministry of Health also issued reassuring statements that Catalonia is at risk and that the health system is ready to detect and treat coronavirus. The situation was allegedly changed by the statements made by a number of large companies about refusing to participate in the event because of fears of a possible infection with the coronavirus that arose in the Chinese province of Hubei.

The declared precautions, such as the ban on participation of all visitors from Hubei Province and constant monitoring of body temperature, did not seem to convince the exhibitors. Many large companies have refused to participate in MWC, such as Amazon, Facebook, Intel, LG, Sony, NTT Docomo, NVIDIA, Ericsson, MediaTek, Vivo. Due to the absence of these companies, the exhibition center will be empty by about 10%, and this will especially affect the 3rd hall, which, as a rule, is the most visited.

However, according to sources from the association, the Friday meeting in Barcelona is just the general advice of the company, which was also planned several months ago. And although some uncertainty hangs in the air, workers continue to prepare for the event and assemble stands, because the upcoming exhibition is one of the largest technological events in the world, thanks to which companies open up new opportunities and earn solid profits.

Despite widespread fears about the coronavirus epidemic, GSMA is constantly in contact with both the Fira de Barcelona exhibition center and government agencies to ensure that a large-scale event like the MWC will be held without problems and health risks for participants and visitors.
